President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his nationwide broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, outlined his administration’s key policy directions and reassured citizens of his commitment to steering the country towards stability, growth and unity. Speaking on Tuesday, the President acknowledged the economic challenges faced by Nigerians but stressed that the sacrifices being made today would secure a more prosperous future for generations to come.
Tinubu underscored that the removal of fuel subsidies and foreign exchange reforms, though painful, were necessary steps to revive the economy and place it on the path of sustainability. According to him, subsidy payments had drained public resources for decades, benefitting only a few while leaving the majority of Nigerians impoverished. He emphasized that the bold reforms would eventually translate into job creation, infrastructure development and stronger national revenues.
On national security, the President assured citizens that his government would continue to intensify efforts to protect lives and property across the country. He revealed that new strategies were being deployed to tackle insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping, while also pledging support for the armed forces and security agencies. Tinubu reiterated his belief that without security, no meaningful economic or social development could take place.
The President also spoke on Nigeria’s democratic journey, paying tribute to past leaders and citizens who made sacrifices for the nation’s independence and democratic progress. He called on Nigerians to strengthen the values of unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, stressing that the country’s diversity was its greatest asset. According to him, the survival and progress of Nigeria depend on collective effort and shared responsibility.
In the area of economic opportunities, Tinubu highlighted his administration’s initiatives to support small and medium-sized enterprises, boost agricultural productivity, and encourage investments in technology and manufacturing. He assured that policies were being designed to make Nigeria more attractive to investors while empowering local businesses to thrive in the face of global competition.
The President further reaffirmed his commitment to youth empowerment, noting that Nigerian youths remain the backbone of the nation’s future. He promised that education, skills development, and innovation would remain at the center of his government’s agenda. Additionally, he encouraged young Nigerians to believe in the country’s potential and contribute positively to its growth.
