ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — The Nigeria Police Force has begun full enforcement of the country’s tinted glass permit regulations, warning that motorists without valid documentation will face sanctions including fines, vehicle impoundment or prosecution.

The enforcement, which took effect Oct. 2, follows months of a grace period after authorities extended the deadline amid public concern. Police said the measure is intended to deter crimes often linked to vehicles with unauthorized tinted windows and to strengthen national security.

“This is not about punishing law-abiding citizens,” said Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin. “It is about ensuring safety, transparency, and security on our roads. Those who have genuine reasons for tinted glass should obtain the proper permits through the approved channels.”

Under the rules, vehicle owners must apply for a Tinted Glass Permit through the police portal. “Any motorist found with unauthorized tinted glass will have the vehicle impounded and may be prosecuted in line with existing laws,” Hundeyin said.

Authorities urged compliance nationwide and called on citizens to report any abuses during enforcement. “We are committed to carrying out this exercise fairly and professionally,” Hundeyin added, pledging that the police would not tolerate extortion or harassment under the guise of the enforcement drive.
