Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed speculations suggesting that he plans to step down for another aspirant ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 polls, insisted that he remains committed to pursuing his political ambitions and has not entered into any agreement to back down for anyone.

In a statement issued through his media office on Wednesday, Atiku described the reports as “baseless and mischievous,” accusing political opponents of spreading falsehoods to undermine his influence within the party. He maintained that his commitment to democratic processes and the future of Nigeria remains unwavering, adding that his political journey is guided by principles and not by pressures from rival camps.

The former vice president, who has contested the presidency multiple times, stressed that he has the right to pursue his ambition like every other Nigerian. He noted that while political alliances and negotiations are part of democracy, he has not at any point agreed to shelve his aspirations for another contender.

Party insiders suggest that the rumours were fueled by internal power struggles within the PDP as the opposition party seeks to reposition itself ahead of the next general elections. Several stakeholders have been calling for unity and consensus building, but divisions persist over the choice of a standard bearer capable of challenging the ruling party in 2027.

Atiku, however, reiterated his loyalty to the PDP and expressed confidence that the party will overcome its internal challenges. He urged party members and supporters to disregard fabricated reports and focus instead on strengthening the opposition’s chances in the coming elections.

Political analysts believe Atiku’s latest clarification signals his determination to remain a major player in the race, despite speculations about his age and repeated bids for the presidency. They argue that his influence, resources, and network within and outside the PDP make him a formidable force in the political landscape.

As the countdown to 2027 gathers momentum, the former vice president has assured Nigerians that he will continue to consult widely and pursue what he describes as “a vision for a united and prosperous country.” For now, he maintains, stepping down is not on his agenda.
