Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has taken a swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what he described as the administration’s poor handling of national unity and governance. Atiku’s remarks came amid ongoing efforts by the President to mend relations with northern Christians, following growing discontent over perceived political marginalization and religious imbalance in the current administration.

Speaking through his media aide, Atiku accused President Tinubu of running an administration that has failed to promote inclusiveness and national cohesion. He alleged that the government’s policies and appointments have deepened divisions rather than bridging them, stressing that Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength, not conflict. According to him, the country needs leadership that prioritizes fairness, justice, and balanced representation across ethnic and religious lines.

Atiku further criticized the President’s approach to governance, describing it as reactionary and insensitive to the plight of ordinary Nigerians. He lamented the rising cost of living, insecurity, and unemployment, noting that many citizens have lost faith in the government’s ability to deliver meaningful reforms. “A government that truly cares about unity and progress must listen to the cries of its people and not respond only when tensions escalate,” he said.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu has intensified efforts to calm northern Christian leaders who have expressed concerns about exclusion from key political and administrative positions. Reports indicate that the President recently held a series of closed-door meetings with representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other faith-based groups in the region, assuring them of his commitment to inclusivity and equitable governance.

During the meetings, President Tinubu reportedly acknowledged the grievances of northern Christians and promised to address them through future appointments and policy adjustments. He emphasized that his government remains committed to promoting unity, peace, and national development irrespective of religious or ethnic backgrounds.

Political observers believe the move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the President’s support base in northern Nigeria, where religious and political dynamics remain highly influential. They, however, cautioned that genuine reconciliation would require consistent action, not just rhetoric, to restore trust among the affected communities.

As the exchange between Atiku and Tinubu continues to generate political tension, analysts warn that the growing divide between government and opposition figures could further polarize the nation if not carefully managed. They urged both leaders to focus on constructive dialogue and collaborative solutions that can address the pressing socio-economic challenges facing millions of Nigerians.
