UYO, Nigeria (FN) — The Nigerian Army has launched a formal investigation into the death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, who sustained fatal burns during a fire incident at Wellington Bassey Barracks in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The officer died on October 6, 2025, at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital after nearly two weeks of intensive care.

The incident, which occurred on September 22, involved Haruna and his wife, according to a statement issued Friday by Captain Lawal Muhammad, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade. “An investigation was instituted at the onset of the incident to ascertain the circumstances surrounding it before the demise of the officer,” Muhammad said. “The outcome of the investigation will be made public upon its conclusion.”

Haruna, a Regimental Medical Officer with the 6 Battalion, was immediately evacuated to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) following the fire. Despite efforts by the medical team to stabilize his condition, he succumbed to his injuries on October 6. “Despite concerted efforts by the medical team to stabilise his condition, the officer sadly passed away,” Muhammad added.

The Army expressed condolences to Haruna’s family, colleagues, and friends, and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and accountability. “The Nigerian Army deeply commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased officer and prays for the repose of his soul,” the statement read.

Military investigations into personnel deaths are typically conducted by boards of inquiry, which assess the cause of the incident, determine whether foul play was involved, and recommend disciplinary or legal action if necessary. These inquiries are governed by strict internal protocols aligned with military ethics and operational standards.

Over the years, the Nigerian Army has faced increased scrutiny over isolated cases of personnel deaths, including those arising from domestic disputes, operational mishaps, and accidents. Public demand for transparency has grown, prompting the military to adopt more open communication strategies in such cases.

While details surrounding the fire remain unclear, the Army has pledged to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation. The involvement of the officer’s spouse has raised questions, but no formal accusations have been made pending the outcome of the inquiry.

The incident has reignited conversations around domestic safety and mental health support within military communities. Advocacy groups have called for improved counseling services and conflict resolution programs for personnel and their families.

Lieutenant Haruna’s colleagues described him as a dedicated officer committed to the welfare of troops under his care. His death has left a void in the medical corps of the 2 Brigade, where he was known for his professionalism and compassion.

The findings of the investigation are expected to be released in the coming weeks. The Army has urged the public to refrain from speculation and allow due process to take its course.
