The Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs to the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has lambasted a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for what he described as “reckless, misleading, and disrespectful comments” targeted at the Senate President. The aide accused the opposition figure of making baseless statements aimed at tarnishing Akpabio’s image and undermining the integrity of the National Assembly.
In a strongly worded statement released in Abuja, the aide, Mr. Jackson Udom, said the PDP stalwart’s remarks were nothing more than a desperate attempt to attract political relevance through falsehoods. He noted that the Senate President remains focused on delivering effective legislative leadership and promoting national unity, despite persistent distractions from political opponents. “Senator Akpabio’s record of service and commitment to Nigeria’s progress speaks for itself. No amount of propaganda can erase his achievements or mislead Nigerians,” Udom stated.
Udom further accused the PDP chieftain of deliberately twisting facts about recent legislative developments to score cheap political points. According to him, Akpabio has demonstrated transparency, inclusiveness, and accountability since assuming the leadership of the 10th Senate, contrary to insinuations of bias or favoritism. He added that the Senate President continues to enjoy the overwhelming confidence of lawmakers across party lines, which reflects his ability to unite diverse political interests in the National Assembly.
“The Senate President has maintained decorum and impartiality in steering the affairs of the upper chamber,” Udom emphasized. “It is therefore unfortunate that certain individuals, instead of engaging constructively, resort to making inflammatory statements that threaten the dignity of our democratic institutions.”
The aide advised opposition politicians to focus on issue-based contributions rather than resorting to what he termed “character assassination and political blackmail.” He stressed that Akpabio’s leadership has brought stability and renewed purpose to the Senate, especially through reforms that promote legislative efficiency and national development.
He also reminded critics that leadership of the National Assembly is a product of constitutional processes and collective decision-making, not partisan favoritism. “Senator Akpabio was duly elected by his colleagues and continues to uphold the principles of fairness, justice, and accountability,” he reiterated, calling on the PDP leader to withdraw his comments and tender an unreserved apology.
The statement concluded by reaffirming Akpabio’s commitment to working with all stakeholders, regardless of party affiliation, in advancing the nation’s democratic growth. Udom maintained that no amount of political mischief would distract the Senate President from his mandate to provide purposeful leadership for the Nigerian people.
