The Presidency has debunked widespread rumours suggesting plans to replace the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, following reports of his recent illness. Presidential sources confirmed on Monday that the minister is “recovering well” and remains fully in charge of his duties, describing the replacement speculations as false and unfounded.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the Presidency clarified that Edun’s temporary absence from public events was strictly for medical reasons and had nothing to do with any administrative or political issues. Ngelale noted that the minister has been receiving adequate medical care and is expected to resume full official engagements shortly.
“The Honourable Minister is in good spirits and responding positively to treatment. There is absolutely no consideration or discussion within the Presidency about replacing him,” Ngelale said. “The President holds Mr. Edun in high regard for his competence, loyalty, and dedication to the ongoing economic reforms.”
Reports had earlier circulated on social media and some online platforms alleging that the Presidency was secretly considering a replacement due to concerns about Edun’s health. The rumours gained traction amid speculation over Nigeria’s current economic challenges, including inflation, exchange rate instability, and the implementation of fiscal reforms.
However, officials close to the matter dismissed such claims as politically motivated and aimed at distracting the administration from its ongoing economic recovery agenda. They emphasized that Edun has been actively involved in coordinating key economic policies, including fiscal consolidation, revenue reforms, and engagement with international financial institutions.
Political analysts have commended the government’s quick clarification, noting that transparency regarding the health of key public officials is crucial for maintaining investor confidence and public trust. They also urged the media to exercise caution and verify sensitive information before publication to avoid unnecessary panic or misinformation.
As the Finance Minister continues his recovery, the Presidency reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the momentum of economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, assuring Nigerians that the administration remains united and focused on achieving macroeconomic stability and long-term national growth.
