FIFA has firmly rejected former President Donald Trump’s recent threats to relocate 2026 World Cup matches from U.S. host cities he deems “unsafe.” Trump had suggested that he might request FIFA President Gianni Infantino to move matches from cities like Boston, Seattle, and San Francisco unless local authorities improved safety conditions.

In response, FIFA emphasized that decisions regarding host cities and match locations are within its jurisdiction and are not subject to political influence. A FIFA spokesperson stated that while safety and security are top priorities for all FIFA events, the responsibility for ensuring these standards lies with national and local governments. The spokesperson added that FIFA expects all 16 host cities to meet the necessary requirements to successfully host the tournament.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu dismissed Trump’s threats, citing binding contractual agreements that protect the city’s position as a host. She criticized the president’s remarks as part of a broader political agenda and emphasized Boston’s commitment to inclusivity and public safety.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, with the U.S. set to host the majority of the matches. The tournament will feature 48 teams and is expected to be the largest World Cup to date.

FIFA’s response underscores its stance on maintaining the integrity and independence of the World Cup’s organization, irrespective of political pressures.
