UYO, Nigeria (FN) — Guinness Nigeria has introduced a new stout variant, Guinness Smooth, at a high-profile launch event in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, aiming to attract younger consumers with a lighter, fruit-infused alternative to its classic brew.
The launch, held over the weekend, featured live music, entertainment, and appearances by local celebrities, including Guinness World Record holder in radio broadcasting George Essien, popularly known as Mighty George. Hundreds of guests gathered to sample the new product and celebrate the brand’s expansion.
Guinness Smooth is described by the company as a refreshing, easy-drinking stout with fruity and butterscotch notes. Attendees praised the drink’s mild profile, saying it was more approachable than traditional stout offerings.

Odinakachi Njoku, brand manager for Guinness Nigeria, said the new product reflects the company’s commitment to innovation while honoring its heritage. “Guinness has a long-standing presence in Nigeria and across Africa,” Njoku said. “This launch is part of our journey to expand the Guinness family.”
Njoku said Uyo was chosen for the launch because of its vibrant youth culture and nightlife. “We’re here to celebrate the people and strengthen our relationship with them,” he said.
Carl Mbagwu, head of division for Guinness Nigeria’s eastern region, said Guinness Smooth offers a distinct experience compared to the original Guinness Stout. “It’s smoother, richer, and easier to drink,” Mbagwu said. “Uyo is a key market for growth and engagement.”
The company also emphasized its commitment to responsible drinking and local economic development. Guinness Nigeria partnered with local vendors, entertainers, and event organizers to support the community during the launch.
“We believe in investing in the communities where we operate,” Njoku said. “This event is not just about a new product — it’s about building relationships.”
Guinness Nigeria is a subsidiary of Diageo Plc, one of the world’s largest producers of alcoholic beverages. The company has operated in Nigeria for decades and continues to expand its product offerings to meet changing consumer preferences.
With Guinness Smooth now available in Akwa Ibom, the company plans to roll out the product in other regions, positioning it as a modern, culturally resonant addition to its portfolio.
