PARIS (FN) — Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has insisted he is innocent following his conviction for criminal conspiracy linked to illegal campaign financing from Libya.
“I am innocent… I will not apologise for something I didn’t do,” the 70-year-old said after being sentenced to five years in prison. The charges stem from allegations that Sarkozy accepted millions of euros from former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi during his time as France’s Interior Minister.
The court found Sarkozy guilty of conspiracy to illegally finance his 2007 presidential campaign, marking a dramatic chapter in the political legacy of the former head of state.
He was acquitted of three other charges related to the case.
Sarkozy has consistently denied any wrongdoing and is expected to appeal the verdict.
