LA MESA, Calif. (FN) — Officer Lauren Craven, 25, of the La Mesa Police Department, was killed Monday night while assisting victims of a crash on Interstate 8, prompting an outpouring of grief from law enforcement and the local community.

Craven, who joined the department in February 2024, was returning from San Diego Central Jail when she encountered a collision and stopped to help. She was fatally struck by another vehicle while outside her patrol car.

A law enforcement procession escorted her body to the medical examiner’s office Tuesday morning. Outside La Mesa Police Headquarters, a growing memorial of flowers and candles drew mourners from across the region, including fellow officers, first responders, and residents.

“We didn’t just lose an officer — we lost a beloved daughter, sister, girlfriend, teammate, and friend,” said La Mesa Police Chief Ray Sweeney at a news conference. “Lauren was a light. Her positivity was immediate and genuine… she led with compassion, courage, and professionalism.”

Community members described Craven as approachable and kind. “She would smile and give a little wave from her vehicle — it was a nice way to connect,” said Kim Herrera, a local resident. “I’m just heartbroken. We lost one of our own.”

Michelle Willis, whose brother was also a police officer, said the news “went straight to my heart.” Amy Grady, wife of a retired Homeland Security officer, added, “Every single day when these officers suit up, they’re being brave.

Retired California State Parks officer Olen Golden said Craven “had the heart and desire to serve the public. That’s where it’s hard for us. Her life was cut short.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered flags at the state Capitol to be flown at half-staff in her honor. “Officer Craven served her community with pride and dedication,” he said. “Jennifer and I are heartbroken by her loss… May her memory never be forgotten.”

Craven’s death marks a devastating loss for the La Mesa Police Department and the wider San Diego law enforcement community. Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
