GOMBE, Nigeria (FN) — Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya has expressed deep sorrow over the death of five teenagers who drowned in a boat mishap on the Nafada River on Saturday.
The victims were identified as Najib Ibrahim, 18; Hauwa’u Jidda Adamu Siddi Dogal, 15; Ummati Haruna Baraya, 16; Umaira Gidado, 16; and Amina Jaliya, 15, all residents of the Nafada community in Gombe State.
In a statement issued Sunday by the Director-General of Press Affairs at the Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, Yahaya described the tragedy as “heart-wrenching and painful.”

“The loss of these promising young souls is particularly devastating, not only because of their tender ages but also for the anguish it has caused their families and the entire community,” the governor said.
Yahaya extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Nafada, assuring them of the state government’s support during their time of grief.
“This incident is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety on our waterways,” he added.
Community members described the victims as bright and hopeful teenagers whose dreams were abruptly cut short. “It’s a dark day for Nafada,” said local elder Mallam Haruna Gidado, who lost a niece in the tragedy. “The pain is too heavy to bear.”
Residents have called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and the provision of life jackets for travelers and fishermen who rely on the river daily.
Officials said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident and to prevent future occurrences.
