LAGOS, Nigeria (FN) — Prince Odi Okojie, a federal lawmaker and husband of Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson, is facing public backlash over his renovation of the Our Lady of Lourdes Girls Grammar School in Uromi, Edo State.

The project, facilitated through the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), includes major infrastructure upgrades such as a new science laboratory, ICT building, solar installations, and classroom renovations. Okojie said the initiative was inspired by his childhood and the school’s legacy in empowering young girls.

“I am pleased to report that the contractors are demonstrating exceptional diligence, with the project poised to reach approximately 95% completion,” Okojie said during a recent inspection. He emphasized that the upgrades would significantly enhance the learning environment for students.

The renovation includes: Construction and equipping of a state-of-the-art science laboratory, Construction and equipping of a modern ICT building, Renovation of two blocks of seven classrooms each, Installation of three 10KVA inverter systems, Provision of a borehole and overhead water tank, Installation of solar-powered street lights, and External works including a gatehouse and erosion control.

Despite the scope of the project, Okojie has come under fire from critics who questioned the transparency and completeness of the work. Social media users accused him of showcasing an unfinished project and alleged mismanagement of public funds.

In response, a spokesperson for the NSSEC defended the initiative, stating that the project followed due process and was part of a broader federal effort to improve secondary education infrastructure. “We commend Hon. Okojie for his commitment to educational development. The project is on track and aligns with our national standards,” the official said.

The school’s principal, Sister Mary Agatha, expressed gratitude for the renovation, saying it would transform the learning experience for students. “We’ve never had facilities like these before. The science and ICT buildings will open new doors for our girls,” she said.

Students also voiced their excitement. “I can’t wait to use the new lab,” said Chiamaka Okoye, a senior student. “It makes me feel like our education matters.”

Parents, however, offered mixed reactions. While some praised the effort, others urged greater transparency. “We appreciate the upgrades, but we want to be sure everything is done properly,” said Mrs. Efe Igbinovia, whose daughter attends the school. “Our children deserve the best, and we hope this isn’t just for show.”

Okojie, who represents Esan North East/Esan South East Federal Constituency, reaffirmed his commitment to educational development. “I shall persist in lobbying for initiatives that nurture educational excellence and foster opportunities for future generations,” he said.

The controversy highlights growing public scrutiny of constituency projects and the demand for greater accountability in government-led development efforts.
