Abuja, Nigeria (FN) — Assistant Inspector-General of Police Nkechi Eze has been appointed as the first Director of the newly established Directorate of Force Medical Services, the Nigeria Police Force announced Thursday.
The appointment follows the upgrade of the Police Medical Section to a full-fledged directorate, a move aimed at improving healthcare delivery for police personnel across the country.
Force spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin said the new directorate will provide more comprehensive and efficient medical services nationwide. He described Eze as a seasoned clinician and administrator with over 27 years of service.
Born in Umuahia, Abia State, and originally from Agbudu in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, Eze holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Benin.
Her career has spanned medical postings in Oyo, Ekiti, Rivers, the Federal Capital Territory, and Lagos, where she played key roles in improving officer welfare and healthcare infrastructure.

Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun congratulated Eze and urged her to use her experience to make the directorate a model of excellence. He said the creation of the directorate reflects a strategic investment in the well-being and productivity of police personnel, calling it essential to the operational effectiveness of the Force.
Reactions to the appointment have been largely positive. A senior officer in the Lagos Command described Eze’s selection as “long overdue,” praising her blend of medical expertise and institutional knowledge. Public health advocates also welcomed the move, with one analyst calling it “a step toward integrating professional medical standards into law enforcement.”
The new directorate is expected to oversee policy, infrastructure, and personnel development in police medical services nationwide. Eze’s leadership is seen as pivotal in shaping a more responsive and modern healthcare system within the Force.
