TAKOMA PARK, Md. (FN) — A 44-year-old Maryland man has been charged with multiple offenses after allegedly disguising himself as a woman to secretly record women inside gym locker rooms, authorities said.
Tshikundi Taty, of Takoma Park, was arrested on Oct. 29 after police tracked him to a Planet Fitness location in White Oak, where he was found inside the women’s locker room wearing a wig, mask, and sunglasses. Officers say he was actively attempting to record women at the time of his arrest.
The investigation began on Oct. 10 when a woman at One Life Fitness in Germantown reported seeing someone filming her while she showered. Police say the suspect entered the women’s locker room in disguise and fled after recording.
Detectives identified Taty as the suspect and allege he used similar tactics at multiple gym locations. Authorities say he removed his disguise after filming and quickly exited the premises.
Taty faces two counts of Peeping Tom and two counts of visual surveillance with prurient intent. Police believe there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
“This is a serious violation of privacy and trust,” said Sgt. Rebecca Innocenti, spokesperson for Montgomery County Police. “We are committed to ensuring justice for the victims and preventing future incidents.”
The case has sparked public concern and renewed calls for tighter security measures in fitness centers, particularly around locker room access and surveillance.
Taty is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. His legal representation has not issued a public statement.
Montgomery County Police are asking potential victims or witnesses to contact them at 240-773-6200 or reach Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities review evidence and assess the scope of the alleged misconduct.
