LONDON (FN) — The Premier League has confirmed that only one match will be played on Boxing Day 2025, breaking with a century-old tradition of a full festive fixture list. The decision, driven by scheduling constraints linked to expanded European competitions, has drawn mixed reactions from fans, clubs, and commentators.
Manchester United will host Newcastle United on Friday, Dec. 26 — the sole top-flight game scheduled for the day. The rest of Matchweek 18 will be spread across Dec. 27 and 28, with Matchweek 19 beginning on Dec. 30.
“The Premier League would like to acknowledge the circumstances that have led to a reduced number of matches on Boxing Day this season – impacting an important tradition in English football,” the league said in a statement.
Officials cited changes to the domestic calendar, including adjustments to the FA Cup and the impact of UEFA’s expanded club competitions, which have reduced the number of available weekends. Although the league still hosts 380 matches, it now operates over 33 weekends — fewer than in previous seasons.

Former England striker Gary Lineker called the move “a sad break from tradition,” tweeting that Boxing Day football “has always been part of the soul of the English game.”
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed disappointment but acknowledged the scheduling pressures. “It’s unfortunate, but we understand the need to adapt. We’ll make the most of the spotlight,” he said.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes said the team was “honored to play the only Boxing Day fixture,” adding, “We’ll give fans a performance worthy of the occasion.”
Fan groups were less forgiving. The Football Supporters’ Association released a statement saying, “Boxing Day is more than just a date — it’s a ritual. Reducing it to one match feels like a loss for the entire footballing community.”
Broadcaster Laura Woods noted the impact on families: “For many, Boxing Day football is a shared tradition. This change alters the rhythm of the holidays.”
To protect player welfare, the Premier League said it has increased rest periods between rounds 18, 19, and 20, ensuring no club plays within 60 hours of another match.
The league also assured fans that Boxing Day 2026, which falls on a Saturday, will feature a fuller fixture list.
“This isn’t a permanent shift,” said Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters. “We’re committed to preserving the traditions of the game while navigating a changing global calendar.”
Despite the reassurances, many fans say the change marks a turning point in how football balances heritage with modern demands.
“Tradition matters,” said lifelong Arsenal supporter Tom Jenkins. “We understand the pressures, but football without its rituals loses something essential.”
The lone Boxing Day clash at Old Trafford is expected to draw massive viewership, but for many, the absence of a full slate of matches will be felt far beyond the pitch.
