LOKOJA, Nigeria (FN) — Nigerian soldiers rescued two abducted civilians and recovered N3.8 million in ransom money during a firefight with armed kidnappers in Kogi State, military officials said Monday.

The operation was carried out by troops from the 12 Brigade, stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Oguma. Acting on intelligence reports, the soldiers launched a mission into Achigili Forest, a known hotspot for criminal activity along the Itobe–Adumu–Ejule corridor.

Army spokesperson Lt. Hassan Abdullahi said the rescue took place on Sunday, November 2, after surveillance indicated that relatives of the victims were preparing to deliver ransom payments to the captors.

As the troops advanced into the forest, they encountered hostile fire from the kidnappers. A brief but intense gun battle ensued, during which the soldiers overpowered the assailants, forcing them to retreat into the dense terrain.

“The criminals were subdued by superior firepower and fled with injuries, abandoning both the hostages and the ransom,” Abdullahi said in a statement. No casualties were reported among the troops.

The two victims were safely extracted from the scene and have since undergone debriefing. Authorities confirmed that the N3.8 million intended for their release was recovered and returned to them.

Military officials said the victims remain in protective custody and will be formally handed over to civilian authorities after final security checks are completed.

The rescue highlights the growing threat of organized kidnapping in central Nigeria, where criminal groups exploit forested areas to stage ambushes and demand payments from families.

Security analysts have warned that the Itobe–Adumu–Ejule axis has become increasingly volatile, with several abductions reported in recent months despite ongoing military patrols.

The Nigerian Army urged residents to remain vigilant and share actionable intelligence, emphasizing that community cooperation remains vital in dismantling criminal networks operating in the region.
