LUČANI, Serbia — Serbian football was left in shock Sunday evening after Radnicki 1923 head coach Mladen Zizovic collapsed on the sidelines and later died during a top-flight league match against Mladost.
Zizovic, 44, suffered a heart attack just 22 minutes into the Mozzart Bet Super League fixture. The match was initially paused as medical personnel rushed to his aid, but despite efforts to resuscitate him and a transfer to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

The father of three, originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina, had only recently taken charge of Radnicki 1923, based in the city of Niš. Sunday’s game marked his third appearance on the touchline for the club since his appointment on October 23.
Following the medical emergency, the match briefly resumed but was ultimately abandoned after players and officials were informed of Zizovic’s passing. Emotional scenes unfolded on the pitch as Radnicki players collapsed in tears, visibly distraught. Opposing players from Mladost also appeared shaken, and the referee quietly exited the field.
The Football Association of Serbia issued a statement expressing “deep sorrow and disbelief,” calling Zizovic’s death a “tremendous loss for the entire football community.” The federation extended condolences to his family, club, and supporters, praising his passion and contributions to the sport.
Zizovic enjoyed a 19-year playing career, earning two international caps for Bosnia and Herzegovina as a midfielder. He played primarily in Bosnia, with stints in Albania, before transitioning to coaching in 2017. His managerial career included roles in Bosnia, North Macedonia, and Saudi Arabia.
Tributes poured in from across the Serbian football landscape. Red Star Belgrade posted condolences on social media, writing, “Rest in peace, Mladen.” Partizan Belgrade also expressed sympathy, calling the news “heartbreaking” and offering support to Radnicki and Zizovic’s loved ones.
Fans and former players shared memories of Zizovic online, describing him as a dedicated mentor and a calm presence on the sidelines. “He was more than a coach—he was a leader who inspired respect,” one supporter wrote.
The Serbian league has not yet announced whether upcoming fixtures involving Radnicki 1923 will be postponed. The club has also not released a formal statement, but local media report that grief counseling is being offered to players and staff.
Zizovic’s sudden passing has reignited conversations around health screenings and emergency preparedness in professional sports, with calls for enhanced medical protocols during matches.
