ABUJA, Nigeria (FN) — The Nigerian Senate on Thursday confirmed Kingsley Tochukwu Ude as a Minister of the Federal Republic, following his nomination by President Bola Tinubu.

Ude, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) from Enugu State, replaces Uche Nnaji, who resigned earlier this year. His confirmation followed a screening session held at the National Assembly in Abuja.

During the screening, Ude addressed questions on national and international issues, including Nigeria’s diplomatic response to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump. He said the matter was being handled diplomatically by President Tinubu and did not require legal intervention.

Ude also weighed in on the debate over separating the offices of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, arguing that the effectiveness of the role depends more on the integrity and independence of the officeholder than on structural reform.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the President’s nomination letter aloud, citing constitutional provisions for ministerial appointments. Following his responses, Ude was asked to “take a bow,” a gesture signaling the Senate’s approval.

Reactions from lawmakers were largely positive. Senator Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu East) described Ude as “a brilliant legal mind with a deep understanding of governance.” Others praised his calm demeanor and clarity during questioning.

Civil society groups offered cautious support. “We welcome Ude’s confirmation, but urge him to prioritize judicial independence and transparency,” said Aisha Bello, director of the Abuja-based Policy Rights Initiative.

Public reactions were mixed. “It’s good to see someone with real legal experience in office,” said Emeka Okoro, a law student in Enugu. “But we hope he doesn’t become just another political figure.” On social media, some users questioned the brevity of the screening process, calling for more rigorous vetting.

Ude previously served as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Enugu State, where he was credited with reforms in legal administration. His appointment is expected to strengthen President Tinubu’s cabinet amid ongoing governance and judicial reforms.

The new minister is expected to be sworn in within days and will likely play a key role in shaping Nigeria’s legal and diplomatic strategies in the months ahead.
