ABUJA, Nigeria (FN) — Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Thursday reaffirmed his administration’s determination to eradicate terrorism and strengthen diplomatic ties, calling for unity and focus as his government pursues economic and security reforms.
Addressing the Federal Executive Council at the presidential villa in Abuja, Tinubu said his government is engaging international partners to advance national stability and prosperity. “We will defeat terrorism,” he declared. “The task ahead is to move forward with clarity of purpose.”
The meeting marked the council’s first session since July and followed a period of heightened security concerns and economic recalibration. Tinubu emphasized that his Renewed Hope Agenda remains the guiding framework for national development.
His remarks came days after U.S. President Donald Trump designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over religious freedom and security issues. Nigerian officials have rejected the label, calling it an inaccurate portrayal of the country’s progress.
In his first public response to the designation, Tinubu said Nigeria remains committed to engaging the global community. “Despite political headwinds and fears, we will continue to work with our partners to ensure peace and economic growth,” he said.
Finance Minister Wale Edun welcomed the president’s comments, noting that the oversubscription of Nigeria’s recent $2.3 billion Eurobond reflects growing investor confidence. “It’s a sign that the world is watching and responding positively,” Edun said.
Security experts have cautiously praised the president’s renewed commitment, urging the administration to match rhetoric with sustained action. “This is a critical moment for Nigeria’s counterterrorism strategy,” said Kabiru Adamu, a security analyst based in Abuja.
International observers have also responded. A spokesperson for the African Union said Tinubu’s emphasis on diplomacy and regional stability aligns with broader continental goals. “Nigeria’s leadership is vital to West Africa’s security architecture,” the official noted.
Tinubu assured citizens that the government is united in its pursuit of peace and national cohesion. He urged Nigerians to remain resilient and supportive of ongoing reforms aimed at restoring security and economic stability.
