LAGOS, Nigeria (FN) — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a message of sympathy to world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua after a fatal road accident in Nigeria that killed two members of his training team and left the fighter injured.
Authorities said the crash occurred Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, a busy route in Ogun State. Joshua was traveling with his entourage when their vehicle collided with a truck. His strength coach and trainer died at the scene, while Joshua was treated for non‑life‑threatening injuries at a Lagos hospital.
In a statement Tuesday, Tinubu described the incident as a “tragic loss” and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. He praised Joshua as a “national treasure and global sports ambassador” and wished him a swift recovery.
“The nation mourns with you, Anthony,” Tinubu said. “We stand by you in this difficult time and pray for healing and strength.”
The accident has drawn global attention, with fellow boxers Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk among those sending messages of support. Fans across Nigeria also expressed shock, noting Joshua’s role as one of the country’s most celebrated athletes.
The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, has long been notorious for accidents, raising renewed concerns about road safety. Officials said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the collision.
Joshua’s management team confirmed he remains in stable condition and is expected to continue recovery in Lagos before resuming training. His next fight, tentatively scheduled for mid‑2026, may be delayed pending medical clearance.
Tinubu’s message underscores the boxer’s significance not only in sports but also as a symbol of Nigerian pride on the global stage.
For now, the nation and the boxing world await further updates on Joshua’s recovery, while mourning the loss of his close team members.
