A New York City professor has deleted her LinkedIn account and been placed on administrative leave after making remarks widely condemned as racist during a public meeting.

Dr. Allyson Friedman, a tenured associate professor at Hunter College, was overheard saying Black students were “too dumb” and needed special training. The comments, made during a Community Education Council meeting earlier this month, were broadcast online and quickly spread across social media.

Hunter College officials described the remarks as “abhorrent” and said an internal investigation is underway. “We are committed to maintaining an environment of respect and equality,” the college said in a statement.

The fallout was immediate. Students expressed shock and disappointment, with one writing online: “Professors should uplift, not demean. Hearing this is heartbreaking.” Parents demanded accountability, saying the comments were unacceptable in any classroom. Civil rights groups condemned the remarks, warning they reinforce harmful stereotypes and undermine efforts to create inclusive learning environments.

On social media, many criticized Friedman’s decision to delete her LinkedIn profile, arguing it was an attempt to avoid responsibility. “Deleting LinkedIn won’t erase what she said. We need systemic change, not damage control,” one user posted.

Legal experts noted that while professors have protections under academic freedom, discriminatory remarks can expose institutions to liability if they create a hostile environment for students. The case has reignited debate about racism in academia and the responsibility of universities to act decisively when educators cross ethical boundaries.

For international observers, the controversy underscores persistent challenges in U.S. higher education: balancing free expression with accountability, and ensuring classrooms remain safe spaces for all students.
