Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has voiced conditional support for recent U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iran, describing his stance as one taken “with regret.” Speaking in Sydney, Carney noted that Canada had not been consulted before the strikes but emphasized that his government supports efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and curbing actions that threaten international peace. He stressed that escalation is not in the world’s interest and urged a diplomatic resolution.

Reactions to his comments have been mixed. Supporters argue that Canada must stand with allies in confronting Iran’s nuclear ambitions and regional aggression, seeing Carney’s position as a necessary show of unity. Critics, however, accuse him of hesitation and inconsistency, suggesting that Canada should not endorse military action without direct involvement or consultation. Within his government, officials such as Defense Minister David McGuinty have underscored that Canadian forces are not participating in the strikes, reinforcing the message that Canada seeks a diplomatic off-ramp.

The strikes come amid heightened tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and regional influence. While Washington and Tel Aviv argue that military action is necessary to deter Iran, many international observers warn that further escalation could destabilize the Middle East and complicate global security efforts.
