The Court of Appeal has upheld a ruling that bars Nigeria’s electoral commission, INEC, from recognizing the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) convention held in Ibadan. The decision marks a significant setback for the opposition party as it struggles with internal disputes ahead of future elections.

The appellate court affirmed the earlier judgment, which declared the Ibadan convention invalid and restrained INEC from validating its outcome. The ruling effectively nullifies decisions taken at the gathering, including leadership selections and resolutions meant to strengthen the party’s structure in Oyo State.

Legal analysts say the judgment underscores the judiciary’s role in enforcing party rules and ensuring compliance with Nigeria’s electoral laws. For the PDP, the setback highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining unity and credibility as it positions itself against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The case originated from internal disagreements within the PDP, with factions contesting the legitimacy of the Ibadan convention. The court’s affirmation now places pressure on the party to resolve its disputes through lawful processes or risk further weakening its political standing.

INEC, which oversees elections and party activities, has been directed to disregard the convention’s outcomes. The commission is expected to continue monitoring the PDP’s compliance with electoral guidelines as preparations for the 2027 polls intensify.

Political observers note that the ruling could reshape the PDP’s strategy in Oyo State and beyond, as the party works to rebuild trust among members and voters. The decision also reinforces the importance of internal democracy in Nigeria’s political parties, where disputes often spill into the courts.

The appellate court’s judgment is final on the matter unless challenged at the Supreme Court, leaving the PDP with limited options as it seeks to stabilize its operations ahead of the next electoral cycle.
