Abia State Governor Alex Otti has praised President Bola Tinubu for appointing former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as Nigeria’s ambassador to Spain, describing the decision as a recognition of Ikpeazu’s service and a boost to the country’s diplomatic presence in Europe.
Otti, who succeeded Ikpeazu in 2023, said the appointment reflects Tinubu’s commitment to inclusivity and national unity. He noted that Ikpeazu’s experience in governance and international engagement would strengthen Nigeria’s ties with Spain, particularly in trade, education, and cultural exchange.
Public reaction has been mixed. Supporters of the move welcomed it as a positive step that could enhance Nigeria’s global image, while critics questioned whether political considerations outweighed merit. On social media, many Nigerians expressed cautious optimism, saying the appointment could open new opportunities for bilateral cooperation if backed by effective diplomacy.
Analysts point out that Spain is a key European partner for Nigeria, especially in energy and migration policy. Ikpeazu’s posting comes at a time when Abuja is seeking stronger alliances to attract investment and manage global challenges.
For Otti, applauding Tinubu’s choice also signals a willingness to bridge political divides in Abia State, where his administration has often been contrasted with Ikpeazu’s. The gesture underscores how foreign appointments can carry domestic political weight, shaping perceptions of unity and continuity in Nigeria’s leadership.
