Leaders of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have cautioned against distractions surrounding Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s re‑election eligibility, urging party members to focus on governance rather than speculation. The warning comes amid growing political chatter ahead of the 2027 elections.
Party officials said debates over whether Aiyedatiwa should seek another term risk undermining stability in the state. “This is not the time for endless politicking,” one APC leader remarked, stressing that the governor’s priority must remain service delivery and economic development.
Supporters of Aiyedatiwa argue that his administration has made progress in infrastructure and education, and deserves space to consolidate achievements. “He has shown commitment to the people, and distractions only weaken our collective goals,” a youth leader in Akure said, calling for unity within the party.
Critics, however, contend that the issue of eligibility cannot be ignored. Some opposition voices insist that clarity is needed to avoid legal disputes in the future. “The constitution must guide us, and ambiguity will only breed conflict,” one political analyst noted, pointing to past election controversies in Nigeria.
Civil society groups have also weighed in, urging politicians to prioritize governance over succession battles. “Citizens want solutions to unemployment and insecurity, not endless debates about who runs in 2027,” a local advocacy group said, warning that political infighting could erode public trust.
For Aiyedatiwa, the challenge lies in balancing leadership with mounting political pressure. While APC leaders rally to shield him from distractions, the debate underscores Nigeria’s broader struggle to separate governance from electioneering—a tension that often shapes the country’s political landscape.
