Akwa Ibom Youths Demand Achievements Amid Governor’s Shoe Controversy

UYO, Nigeria (FN) — Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has come under sharp criticism after images of his reported two-million-naira shoes surfaced online, sparking outrage among youths and fueling debate about his record in office.

The luxury footwear, which quickly went viral on social media, has become a lightning rod for criticism in a state where many residents say they are struggling with unemployment and rising living costs. Youth groups in Akwa Ibom have challenged the governor’s supporters to highlight any tangible milestones he has achieved in the past four years, arguing that his administration has failed to deliver meaningful progress.

“This is not about shoes, it’s about priorities,” said Emmanuel Okon, a youth activist in Uyo. “We want to see evidence of development, not extravagance. If his supporters believe he has achieved something, let them show us.”

Public figures also weighed in. A former state lawmaker, who asked not to be named, described the controversy as “a symptom of disconnect between leadership and the people.” Policy analysts noted that while governors are entitled to personal choices, ostentatious displays of wealth can erode public trust.

On social media, reactions were swift and polarized. Critics accused Eno of insensitivity, with one user posting on X: “Two million naira shoes in a state where youths are jobless? This is shameful.” Others defended the governor, arguing that personal spending should not overshadow his governance. “People are exaggerating. Leaders are human too,” another user wrote.

The uproar has intensified calls for accountability as the 2027 election cycle approaches. Analysts say the controversy underscores a broader frustration among young Nigerians who increasingly demand transparency and results from elected officials.
