Over 2,000 commercial motorcycle operators in Ondo State have publicly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027, pledging to mobilize grassroots support across the state. The declaration, made under the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians.
The endorsement took place in Akure, where riders gathered at the office of the Asiwaju Mandate Group. ACOMORAN’s state chairman, Akinlolu Olumonrin, explained that the decision followed what he described as a thorough assessment of Tinubu’s performance nationwide. He argued that the president remains the most capable candidate to sustain ongoing policies and reforms.
Supporters of the move say the riders’ backing reflects confidence in Tinubu’s economic and infrastructural agenda. Many praised the administration’s efforts to stabilize fuel supply and improve road networks, noting that motorcycle operators are directly affected by such policies. They believe the endorsement signals strong grassroots momentum ahead of the 2027 polls.
Public reaction, however, has been divided. On social media, some Nigerians criticized the endorsement, questioning whether the riders’ support was genuinely voluntary or influenced by political patronage. Others argued that everyday struggles with inflation and unemployment should take precedence over campaign pledges. The debate highlights broader skepticism about political endorsements in Nigeria.
International observers have noted the development as part of Tinubu’s wider re-election strategy, which increasingly focuses on mobilizing grassroots groups. Analysts say endorsements from unions and associations can be powerful in shaping voter turnout, especially in states where informal transport systems remain vital to daily life.
For the riders themselves, the decision is framed as both political and practical. Many see Tinubu’s leadership as essential to sustaining reforms that directly affect their livelihoods. As one rider told reporters, “We looked at what he has done, and we believe he is the only one who can continue the job.” Whether this endorsement translates into votes in 2027 remains to be seen, but it has already added fuel to Nigeria’s evolving political conversation.
