Two people in North Carolina have been arrested after police discovered a 13‑year‑old locked inside a dog kennel and five other children living in what authorities described as “filthy” conditions.

Deputies said they were called to the home following a tip and found the teenager confined in the outdoor kennel. Inside the residence, investigators reported unsanitary conditions and neglect affecting the other children. The arrests were made immediately, and the children were taken into protective custody.

Neighbors expressed shock at the discovery, saying they had no idea such abuse was happening nearby. “It’s heartbreaking to know kids were living like that,” one resident told local media. Community members have since rallied to support the children, donating clothes and supplies.

Officials condemned the situation, calling it one of the worst cases of child neglect they had seen in years. “No child should ever be treated this way,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said. The suspects now face multiple charges, including child abuse and false imprisonment.

The case has drawn national attention, with advocates highlighting the need for stronger child welfare monitoring. Social media users voiced outrage, demanding accountability and systemic reforms to prevent similar tragedies.

Authorities said the children are receiving medical evaluations and will be placed in safe environments. The investigation remains ongoing, but officials stressed that their priority is ensuring the victims recover from what they endured.
