Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has extended the designation of Karim Lamido Local Government Area as an Area of Particular Security Concern for another six months following a deadly attack on Binnari community that reportedly claimed 58 lives. The decision was announced on Monday, October 26, during an emergency security meeting at the Executive Chamber of T.Y. Danjuma House in Jalingo. The governor directed security agencies to intensify operations, identify those responsible for the killings and account for residents still missing after the violence. The renewed security measures follow growing public concern about repeated attacks on communities in the area, despite previous government interventions.
The decision followed the October 23 assault on Binnari, where suspected armed men reportedly invaded the community during market activities, killing residents and forcing others to flee into surrounding bushes and waterways. Police accounts put the death toll at 58, including 15 people who reportedly drowned while attempting to escape across a river. Earlier reports placed the number of fatalities above 30, reflecting differences in casualty information as searches continued. The attack left families traumatised, disrupted commercial activities and heightened fears among residents of neighbouring settlements. Authorities are continuing efforts to establish the full circumstances of the killings and identify those responsible.
Rural settlements in Taraba State have faced recurring violence, displacement and destruction of property.
Kefas announced the extension after consultations with security officials and stakeholders from Karim Lamido, emphasising that protecting lives and property remained a priority for his administration. The governor condemned the attack and expressed sympathy for families who lost relatives and property. He said the government was determined to prevent criminal groups from undermining peace and security in the state. The six month extension is intended to sustain heightened security attention across affected communities while allowing authorities to strengthen surveillance, investigate the latest violence and coordinate measures designed to prevent further attacks.
The governor directed security agencies to establish the identities and whereabouts of all missing residents, investigate the movements of the attackers and determine whether they were connected to other criminal activities. He also instructed relevant authorities to provide support to affected families and ensure that survivors receive necessary assistance. According to the state government, the investigation will examine possible motives behind the assault and information that could help identify the perpetrators. Kefas urged traditional rulers, ward heads, village leaders, young people and farmers to cooperate with security personnel by providing credible information through appropriate channels.

The renewed declaration is not the first special security intervention introduced in Karim Lamido. On January 2, 2026, Kefas designated the local government area a Special Area of Security Concern through Executive Order No. 1 of 2026 following repeated incidents of communal violence, armed attacks and insecurity. The original decision was presented as a preventive measure intended to protect residents, restore public confidence and address threats affecting farming and commercial activities. The latest extension therefore continues an existing security arrangement rather than establishing an entirely new designation. Its renewal highlights the persistence of security challenges despite earlier efforts to stabilise the area.
The state government has also emphasised the importance of addressing the humanitarian consequences of the violence. Survivors of the Binnari attack have reportedly experienced displacement, the loss of relatives and disruption to their livelihoods. Families whose homes or businesses were damaged may require emergency accommodation, food supplies, medical assistance and support in tracing missing relatives. In an earlier intervention, Kefas approved one billion naira for the Taraba State Bureau for Peace and Conflict Management to support peacebuilding and recovery efforts following previous crises in Karim Lamido. The effectiveness of the latest response will partly depend on how quickly assistance reaches those affected and whether security conditions permit displaced residents to return safely.
Families displaced by insecurity in rural communities require humanitarian assistance and stronger protection to rebuild their livelihoods.
The latest violence has also drawn concern from federal lawmakers, particularly senators representing northern states. The Northern Senators Forum condemned the attack and demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible, adding to calls for stronger action by security agencies. Community leaders have similarly emphasised the need for sustained protection rather than temporary deployments following major incidents. However, the identities and motives of the Binnari attackers have not been conclusively established, making a comprehensive investigation essential. The governor has also urged residents and media organisations to verify information before publication, warning that unconfirmed reports could increase tension among communities already struggling with insecurity.
Karim Lamido has experienced longstanding security challenges involving communal disputes, farmer and herder conflicts, armed attacks and competition over land and other resources. In June 2024, troops from the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade visited Gidan Usmanu village after the killing of a traditional ruler, Auwal Wali, during an attack attributed to armed bandits. Military authorities subsequently engaged community representatives and promised to strengthen efforts to apprehend those responsible. The incident illustrates the historical depth of the security challenges affecting the area. Although previous peace meetings and military patrols have helped address particular incidents, the recurrence of violence demonstrates the difficulties involved in establishing lasting stability across communities with longstanding grievances.
Farming and trading are important sources of livelihood in Karim Lamido, where recurring insecurity has disrupted economic activities.
The economic consequences of the latest attack could extend beyond the immediate victims. Karim Lamido is home to communities that depend heavily on agriculture, livestock production, fishing and local markets. Repeated attacks can discourage farmers from cultivating their land, interrupt trading activities, damage transport connections and reduce household incomes. Residents who abandon their farms because of security threats may also face difficulties returning in time for future planting and harvesting seasons. The governor’s renewed security measures could therefore influence both public safety and economic recovery. However, sustainable improvement will require coordinated law enforcement, reliable intelligence, community engagement and credible mechanisms for resolving disputes before they escalate into violence.
As of October 27, 2026, Karim Lamido remains under an extended special security designation for another six months, while investigations into the October 23 Binnari attack continue. Authorities have not publicly announced arrests directly linked to the killings, and efforts to account for missing residents remain an important part of the response. Kefas has pledged to pursue those responsible, support affected families and strengthen cooperation between security agencies and local communities. The coming months will test whether the renewed measures can deliver measurable improvements in public safety, restore confidence among residents and prevent further displacement. For families affected by the tragedy, the immediate priorities remain justice for those killed, assistance for survivors and the assurance that their communities can return to normal life without fear of another attack.
