The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have launched a €20 million peacebuilding and food security initiative aimed at supporting over 200,000 residents in Borno and Yobe states, northeastern Nigeria. The project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through KfW Development Bank, seeks to build resilience and promote a dignified future for communities affected by years of armed conflict.
The initiative focuses on several key areas, including child protection, food security, safe water supply, nutrition, improved access to education, and vocational training for out-of-school children. Additionally, the project promotes locally produced nutritious foods, strengthens food systems, and provides conditional cash transfers, livelihood opportunities, and environmental re-greening. Peace clubs will also be established in schools to foster social cohesion and promote peacebuilding.
According to David Stevenson, WFP Country Director in Nigeria, the second phase of the project will expand on the achievements of the first intervention by increasing access to essential services, enhancing food security, and bolstering peacebuilding initiatives. Stevenson emphasized that years of armed conflict have severely impacted livelihood opportunities, social cohesion, and the well-being of children and women in the region.
Rownak Khan, UNICEF Deputy Representative in Nigeria, highlighted the importance of resilience and peace for every child, woman, and household in northeast Nigeria. The project will target 200,000 people in Borno and Yobe states, with a focus on building resilience and promoting social cohesion. The initiative will also extend to additional local government areas, including Bama and Konduga in Borno State, and Potiskum and Jakusko in Yobe State.
The launch of this initiative marks a significant step towards addressing the humanitarian needs of communities in Borno and Yobe states. With the support of the German government, UNICEF and WFP are working together to promote peace, stability, and development in the region. The project is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of thousands of people, providing them with access to essential services, livelihood opportunities, and a chance to rebuild their lives.
