South African authorities have explained why Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr was denied a visa in 2024, saying the singer’s application was rejected because of an issue with the yellow fever certificate she submitted.
The explanation came from South Africa’s Consul General to Nigeria, Prof. Bobby Moroe, who said the incident happened in February 2024 and was not a recent visa decision. According to Moroe, the document submitted by Ayra Starr did not meet the requirements for entry into South Africa.
The visa problem forced the singer to cancel scheduled performances in Johannesburg and Cape Town, disappointing fans who had already made plans to attend the shows. The concerts were part of the In The City events scheduled for Feb. 16 and 17, 2024.
At the time, event organizers announced the cancellations and said ticket holders would be refunded. They also expressed frustration over visa difficulties affecting some West African artists traveling to South Africa.
