The Federal Government has denied allegations that it stopped issuing 5-year non-immigrant multiple-entry visas to US citizens, a policy the US cited as the reason for its latest visa restrictions against Nigerians. The US government recently introduced new visa policies, reducing non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visa durations for Nigerians to three months with single-entry permitted.
According to the Presidency, the US claim of reciprocity does not accurately reflect the actual situation. The Federal Government has expressed concern over the decision, describing the move as disproportionate and calling for reconsideration in the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation. The new US policy also includes a $250 visa integrity fee on tourists, students, and workers, which forms part of a broader push to tighten immigration enforcement and ensure compliance with US visa regulations.
The US Embassy explained that the revised visa terms are part of the Department’s global visa reciprocity process, designed to align visa policies with international standards and security requirements. The embassy stated that the new guidelines apply only to visas issued on or after July 8, and existing visas will remain valid until their expiration.
The Federal Government has vowed to continue dialogue and engagement with US authorities to resolve the issues that led to the recent developments. In response to the US move, the Nigerian government may adopt reciprocal measures, which would be adjusted once the US revises its stance. This development has sparked diplomatic tensions between the two nations, with the FG urging the US to reconsider its decision.
The visa restrictions have raised questions about the future of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the US. The FG’s stance is that the two countries should maintain a cordial relationship, especially in areas of mutual interest. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the US and Nigeria will navigate these challenges and find a resolution that works for both parties.
