Aniekan Johnson has announced his acceptance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) nomination to contest the Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency seat in the 2027 general elections. The announcement comes ahead of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s expected publication of the list of candidates for the election.

Johnson described his decision as an opportunity to contribute to public service and strengthen representation in Ibesikpo Asutan, emphasizing that political leadership should be measured by its commitment to citizens and the public interest.

“This decision is not about the pursuit of power. It is about service, responsible representation and the belief that politics should improve the lives of the people it serves,” Johnson said.

Nigeria’s democratic history provides important context for the 2027 elections. Since gaining independence in 1960, the country has experienced periods of civilian government, military rule and political transition before returning to sustained civilian rule in 1999. That history has continued to underscore the importance of democratic participation, accountable institutions and credible leadership.

Against this background, Johnson said the 2027 election presents an opportunity for Ibesikpo Asutan to pursue representation that listens to residents, responds to their concerns and places the public interest above personal ambition.

“I believe politics can be conducted with integrity, dignity and accountability. Our people deserve representatives who will engage them, defend their interests and contribute meaningfully to the development of the constituency and Akwa Ibom State,” he said.

His campaign is expected to emphasize responsible leadership, effective representation, community engagement and development, while encouraging greater civic participation across the constituency. Johnson also acknowledged the importance of collective effort in achieving those objectives.

“I cannot accomplish this alone. I need the prayers, counsel, influence and active support of the people as we begin this mission together,” he said.

As the 2027 electoral process approaches, the contest for Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency will form part of the broader political debate in Akwa Ibom State, with voters expected to consider candidates’ records, priorities and visions for representation. Johnson concluded by invoking “Utom Idúñ,” expressing a vision of an Ibesikpo Asutan and Akwa Ibom State that works for everyone.
