Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has made a bold move by arriving at the National Assembly complex in Abuja to resume her legislative duties, despite a six-month suspension imposed by the Senate. Her actions have sparked a tense standoff with legislative leadership, with the Senate maintaining that her suspension remains in effect.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s determination to return to the Senate follows a recent ruling by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, which declared her suspension unconstitutional. The court emphasized that the Senate’s actions deprived her constituents of their right to representation. While the Senate has appealed the ruling, Akpoti-Uduaghan insists on exercising her legislative mandate, stressing that she was elected by the people of Kogi Central and intends to continue representing them.
The senator’s arrival at the National Assembly was met with a significant security presence, including armed personnel from the Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. Despite being barred from entering the main building by security operatives, Akpoti-Uduaghan was accompanied by supporters, including prominent activist Aisha Yesufu.
The Senate has repeatedly warned Akpoti-Uduaghan to stay away from the National Assembly premises, citing the lack of a binding court order mandating her recall. Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu emphasized that the court’s ruling was merely advisory and not enforceable. However, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s lawyer argues that the court’s judgment effectively reinstates her, even if not explicitly termed an “order”.
This standoff highlights the delicate balance between judicial authority and legislative sovereignty in Nigeria’s democracy. As the situation unfolds, it serves as a crucial test of whether Nigeria’s institutions can prioritize justice and fairness over politics and power. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s case has sparked a national debate about legislative accountability, gender equity, and the rule of law, with women’s groups rallying behind her.
