The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has imposed a six-month flying ban on popular Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also known as Kwam 1, due to an incident at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. According to NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, the musician’s actions violated aviation safety regulations, prompting the authority to take disciplinary measures.

The incident occurred when Kwam 1 attempted to board a ValueJet flight with a suspicious liquid substance, later confirmed to be alcohol, which is prohibited onboard Nigerian aircraft. Despite repeated warnings from aviation security personnel and the flight captain, the musician refused to comply, leading to a confrontation that resulted in the liquid spilling on a security officer. The NCAA has since linked the disorderly conduct to a safety breach by two ValueJet pilots who were suspended on August 5 for commencing departure procedures without obtaining mandatory pre-departure clearance.

Achimugu emphasized that aviation rules are global and apply to everyone, regardless of social or political status. “The passenger is going to be blacklisted for the next six months flying in Nigeria,” he said. The authority is also pursuing legal proceedings against the musician, with formal communications underway to the Attorney General of the Federation and the Inspector General of Police. When asked about potential influence from Kwam 1’s ties to President Bola Tinubu, Achimugu assured that everyone involved will be brought to book, citing the administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.

In response to the allegations, Kwam 1 denied any wrongdoing, describing the claims as “not only exaggerated but also misleading.” He claimed the flask in question contained plain drinking water handed to him in the airport lounge. Despite this, the NCAA remains firm in its decision, prioritizing the safety and security of passengers and airport staff.

This incident highlights the importance of adhering to aviation safety regulations and the consequences of non-compliance. The NCAA’s stance demonstrates its commitment to maintaining discipline and accountability within the aviation ecosystem, ensuring that all passengers are held to the same standards.
