The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully rescued 20 Ghanaian nationals, comprising 10 males and 10 females, who were allegedly trafficked to the Uyo Local Government Area of the state. According to DSP Timfon John, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, the rescue operation was carried out on August 18, 2025, following a formal request for assistance from the Ghana Police Service and INTERPOL.

Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives surrounded a well-fenced building in Obio Etoi village, Uyo LGA, where the victims were being held. The swift operation resulted in the rescue of the 20 Ghanaians, who were subsequently taken into protective custody. The police are yet to disclose the identities of the suspects or the exact circumstances surrounding the trafficking operation.

After the rescue, the victims appeared disoriented and were unable to provide useful information to investigators. This led the police to suspect that they may have been hypnotized or subjected to some form of mind control. “The victims presently appear disoriented and have been unable to provide useful information, leading investigators to suspect they may have been hypnotised,” DSP John said. The police are working to determine the extent of the victims’ experiences and provide them with necessary support and care.

The investigation into the trafficking operation is ongoing, with the police working to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice. The Ghana Police Service and INTERPOL are also collaborating with the Akwa Ibom State Police Command to provide support to the victims and facilitate their safe return to Ghana.

The rescue of the 20 Ghanaians highlights the need for continued efforts to combat human trafficking in Nigeria. The Akwa Ibom State Police Command is working to provide support and care to the victims, who may have experienced trauma and exploitation. The police are also urging anyone with information about human trafficking to come forward and assist in the fight against this crime.
