Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the troops sent by Pyongyang to fight in Moscow’s war against Ukraine as he met with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un after both leaders attended China’s military parade.
“Your special forces took part in the liberation of the Kursk region,” Putin said, sitting next to Kim, referring to Russia’s efforts to push back Ukraine’s counter-offensive on Russian territory.
“I would like to note that your soldiers fought courageously and heroically. We will never forget the sacrifices made by your armed forces and the families of your servicemen,” Putin said.
Just a few days ago, North Korea released a propaganda film praising its troops’ efforts fighting for Russia and commemorating those killed. And in August, Kim held two events to meet bereaved families and pay tribute to deceased soldiers.
Western officials estimated that a third of the 12,000 North Korea troops believed to have been deployed so far were either killed or wounded.
