Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has voiced strong criticism of the club’s current trajectory under manager Rúben Amorim, saying he sees little sign of progress or a clear plan since the Portuguese coach took charge. Rooney, who remains the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, expressed his frustration over what he believes is a lack of structure and identity at Old Trafford, despite heavy investment in recent years.
Speaking in a media appearance, the former England captain said United’s performances in the Premier League have been inconsistent, with the team failing to impose itself against both top rivals and lower-ranked opponents. He argued that, under Amorim, United continue to look disjointed and without a defined playing style, an issue that has plagued the club since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
“Right now, I don’t see a plan. There’s no real progress,” Rooney said. “The results might sometimes go our way, but you don’t feel the team is building towards anything long-term. Manchester United should be competing at the very highest level, not drifting season after season.”
Rooney also questioned the recruitment strategy, pointing out that despite significant spending, many new arrivals have struggled to adapt or make the desired impact. He argued that United’s failure to assemble a balanced squad capable of challenging for top honours reflects deeper problems in the club’s football structure and decision-making.
Fans and pundits have echoed similar concerns in recent weeks, noting that the club still lacks the stability and consistency needed to compete with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal. While Amorim was brought in with a reputation for developing young players and implementing an attractive style of football, critics say that identity has not been evident in United’s performances so far.
The criticism comes at a time when pressure is mounting on the club’s hierarchy to deliver tangible improvement, particularly after a decade of managerial changes and mixed results. United supporters have grown increasingly vocal about their dissatisfaction, calling for a clearer vision that can restore the club to its former glory.
Despite the scrutiny, Amorim has insisted he remains focused on rebuilding the team and has asked for patience as he works to implement his ideas. However, with voices like Rooney’s now publicly questioning the direction of the club, the debate over United’s future appears set to intensify in the weeks ahead.
