Tragedy struck in Lagos at the weekend as a final-year student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) drowned while swimming at a popular beach in the city. The incident, which occurred during a group outing with fellow students, has thrown the university community into mourning and raised renewed concerns over safety at recreational beaches across the state.

Eyewitnesses said the student, identified as a final-year undergraduate in the Faculty of Social Sciences, had joined friends for a leisure trip when the mishap happened. According to one of his colleagues who witnessed the incident, the victim was swept away by strong waves shortly after entering the water despite warnings from beach attendants about the rough tide.

Attempts by friends and local divers to rescue him reportedly failed as the current dragged him further into deeper waters. His body was later recovered after an intense search by emergency responders, who were alerted by other visitors at the scene. The tragic development sparked panic among students present, many of whom were left traumatised by the experience.

Speaking on the incident, one student described the victim as a lively and ambitious young man who was looking forward to completing his studies and building a promising career. “He was full of life and very friendly. None of us imagined that a fun outing would end this way,” the student lamented.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that investigations were ongoing while the body had been deposited at a morgue for autopsy. Authorities also reiterated calls for beach operators to enforce stricter safety regulations, including deploying lifeguards and restricting access to unsafe sections of the water during high tides.

Meanwhile, UNILAG management has expressed shock over the student’s death, describing it as a huge loss to the institution. The university promised to provide support to his family while counselling services have been made available to affected students.

The incident has reignited public debate on safety at Lagos beaches, with stakeholders urging government and private operators to prioritise enforcement of safety standards to prevent further tragedies. For many, the drowning is a painful reminder of the need for vigilance and stricter safety measures at recreational facilities.
