The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), has lauded the agency’s deployment of sniffer dogs, describing them as a game-changer in the ongoing war against illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria. Marwa stated that the canines have significantly aided the interception of narcotics at various entry points, particularly at airports and seaports, where traffickers have often tried to outsmart security operatives.

Speaking during a briefing in Abuja, Marwa explained that the dogs have proven to be highly effective in detecting concealed substances that would otherwise escape human detection. He noted that their contribution has not only boosted the morale of NDLEA operatives but has also sent a strong signal to drug cartels that Nigeria is enhancing its capacity to combat illicit trade.

According to him, the agency has recorded several high-profile seizures in recent months with the help of the dogs. He highlighted cases where couriers who had ingested hard drugs were identified and intercepted, as well as instances of concealed consignments within cargo shipments. These successes, he said, have helped strengthen Nigeria’s global reputation as a serious player in the fight against narcotics.

Marwa added that the NDLEA is working towards expanding its canine unit by acquiring more dogs and providing advanced training for both the animals and their handlers. He stressed that this move would enhance surveillance across critical drug trafficking routes, including land borders where smuggling activities remain prevalent.

The NDLEA boss also called on stakeholders, particularly international partners and donor agencies, to support the agency in scaling up its canine operations. He argued that drug cartels are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and Nigeria must match their strategies with technology, intelligence, and specialized tools.

Reiterating President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to tackling drug abuse and trafficking, Marwa assured that the NDLEA would sustain its momentum through innovation, collaboration, and resilience. He maintained that the fight against drugs is not just about law enforcement but also about protecting public health, national security, and the future of Nigerian youth.

The NDLEA has in recent years intensified its operations across the country, seizing record quantities of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and cannabis. With the addition of sniffer dogs to its arsenal, the agency says it is better equipped to outpace drug barons and safeguard Nigeria from the dangers of illicit substances.
