Indian police have arrested a Nigerian national accused of running an elaborate online romance scam that defrauded multiple women of significant sums of money. The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending further investigation, was taken into custody following a joint operation by cybercrime units in New Delhi.
According to police reports, the accused allegedly created fake social media profiles and posed as a wealthy foreign businessman to lure unsuspecting women into online relationships. Investigators said the suspect gained the trust of victims by showering them with affection and promises of marriage before requesting money under various false pretenses, including customs clearance fees and emergency expenses.
Authorities revealed that the operation came to light after several women filed complaints claiming they had been duped by a man they met online. Following months of surveillance and cyber-tracking, law enforcement traced the digital footprints to the Nigerian suspect’s residence, where incriminating evidence including multiple mobile phones, forged documents, and laptops were recovered.
Police further disclosed that preliminary findings indicate the suspect may be part of a larger network of international fraudsters specializing in romance scams. Efforts are now underway to identify and apprehend possible accomplices, both within India and abroad. Investigators also plan to collaborate with Interpol and the Nigerian authorities to determine the extent of the syndicate’s operations.
Speaking on the case, a senior police officer urged members of the public, particularly women, to exercise caution when engaging with strangers on social media. He stressed that cybercriminals often exploit emotions and trust to defraud victims, warning that genuine relationships do not require repeated financial demands.
The arrest has sparked widespread discussion in India, where romance scams and online fraud have been on the rise in recent years. Analysts attribute the trend to the growing use of social media and dating platforms, coupled with limited public awareness about online safety.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities have assured that all victims who came forward will be provided assistance, while measures are being taken to prevent similar scams in the future.
