The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has received a total of 363 applications from media organizations seeking accreditation to cover the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election.

The Commission disclosed this on Tuesday through its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, in a statement issued in Abuja. Olumekun said the high number of requests reflects the growing interest of local and international media in Nigeria’s electoral process.

According to him, the applications came from a wide range of outlets, including print, broadcast, and online media platforms, as well as independent journalists and foreign correspondents. He assured that the Commission remains committed to ensuring transparency and granting equal access to accredited media organizations during the election.

“The Commission appreciates the vital role the media plays in deepening democracy and promoting credible elections,” Olumekun stated. “We have received 363 applications so far, and our accreditation process is guided by fairness, security, and professionalism.”

He emphasized that the presence of the media at polling units, collation centers, and other electoral facilities contributes to accountability and public confidence in the electoral process. The Commission, he said, will continue to collaborate with media stakeholders to ensure unhindered coverage throughout the election period.

Olumekun also reminded interested media organizations that accreditation is a mandatory requirement for election coverage, noting that only accredited journalists will be granted access to restricted areas such as voting points and result collation centers. He urged applicants to complete all necessary procedures before the official deadline to avoid disqualification.

The INEC spokesperson added that the Commission has strengthened its media relations and communication channels to counter misinformation and ensure accurate reporting of electoral activities. He called on journalists to adhere strictly to professional ethics, fact-check reports, and avoid sensationalism during coverage.

“The media has a responsibility to inform the public objectively,” he said. “INEC will continue to engage with editors and correspondents to promote responsible reporting that contributes to peaceful and credible elections.”

The Anambra governorship election, scheduled for November 2025, is expected to draw national attention as major political parties intensify preparations for what analysts describe as a crucial test of Nigeria’s electoral integrity.

Observers note that media participation in the electoral process plays a key role in voter education and public engagement, especially in a politically vibrant state like Anambra.

INEC has repeatedly reaffirmed its readiness for the exercise, highlighting progress in logistics, staff training, and deployment of technology such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) to enhance transparency and efficiency.

As the election draws closer, both domestic and international observers are expected to join accredited media personnel in monitoring the process to ensure that the will of the electorate is accurately reflected in the outcome.
