ABUJA, Nigeria (FN) — A new commissioner of police has assumed command of the Federal Capital Territory, taking over amid growing public concern about security in the nation’s capital.
The officer took over leadership of the command on Friday, Oct. 17, replacing his predecessor who was reassigned to another role within the Nigeria Police Force.
In a brief statement following his assumption of office, the new commissioner pledged to strengthen existing security frameworks and deepen collaboration between the police and the community. He said his goal is to restore public confidence and improve safety for all residents of the capital.
With more than two decades of policing experience, the commissioner has served in various operational and leadership roles across the country. His past assignments include personal protection details for high-level government officials, command roles within mobile police units, and operational leadership at regional and federal levels.
He has also held strategic positions in state commands and at the national headquarters, where he was previously in charge of police information technology operations.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command is considered one of the most critical formations in the country, tasked with securing the seat of government, diplomatic missions, and other vital infrastructure.
Despite continued efforts to curb crime, the capital has faced persistent security challenges, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and attacks in surrounding communities. Residents and stakeholders are hopeful that the new commissioner will bring fresh strategies and firm leadership to improve security outcomes across the territory.
