IBADAN, Nigeria — Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued 21 kidnapped victims in coordinated operations across Kwara and Kogi states, military officials said Saturday.

The rescue was carried out by personnel from the 12 Brigade in Lokoja and the 22 Armoured Brigade in Ilorin under Operation FANSAN YAMA, a security initiative targeting banditry and organized crime in the region.

Lt. Col. Polcarp Okoye, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 2 Division, said the victims were abducted from various locations and had been held captive for periods ranging from days to over four months.

The army’s intensified offensive forced the kidnappers to release the hostages, Okoye said, adding that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in central Nigeria.

Major General C.R. Nnebeife, General Officer Commanding 2 Division and Commander of Sector 3 Operation FANSAN YAMA, oversaw the rescue and ensured the victims received immediate medical care and relief supplies.

Nnebeife visited the victims and expressed sympathy for their ordeal, pledging continued military pressure on criminal elements in the division’s area of responsibility.

The victims were evacuated to a military medical facility for treatment and are expected to be reunited with their families once they fully recover, Okoye said.

The army credited the Nigerian Air Force for providing sustained aerial support during the operation and acknowledged the collaboration of other security agencies.

Nnebeife commended the troops for their bravery and urged them to maintain momentum in restoring peace and security across Kwara, Kogi, and neighboring states.

The rescue marks a significant success in the army’s campaign against kidnapping and banditry, which has plagued parts of central Nigeria in recent years.
