ILE‑IFE, Nigeria (FN), Obafemi Awolowo University has declined to host a scheduled lecture by former presidential candidate Peter Obi, saying organizers failed to provide sufficient notice to allow for security and logistical preparations.
University officials explained that events involving high‑profile political figures require coordination with security agencies and campus administrators, and that the short timeframe made it impossible to guarantee safety. The lecture was therefore canceled to protect students, staff, and visitors.
Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election, has been touring universities and civic spaces to engage young audiences on governance and economic reform. His planned appearance at OAU was expected to draw a large crowd, underscoring the logistical challenges of hosting such events on short notice.

The university’s decision reflects a broader pattern in Nigeria, where institutions often insist on extended lead time before hosting political figures. Similar cancellations have occurred in the past when organizers failed to meet requirements for crowd control, security clearance, and venue management.
While the cancellation disappointed supporters, OAU emphasized that safety remains its top priority. Officials indicated that with proper notification, future engagements could be reconsidered.
