Prince Andrew announced Friday that he will no longer use any of his royal titles or honors, a decision made in consultation with King Charles III and other members of the royal family. The move comes amid renewed scrutiny over his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and other controversies that have plagued the prince for years.

In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, Andrew said, “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first”.

The prince emphasized that he continues to “vigorously” deny all allegations against him. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that stepping further back from public life was necessary to preserve the integrity of the monarchy.

Andrew had previously withdrawn from public duties in 2019 following a widely criticized BBC interview regarding his relationship with Epstein. At the time, he retained his Duke of York title and other honors, but mounting pressure has now led to a complete relinquishment

Royal commentators noted that the timing of the announcement coincides with the upcoming release of books detailing the allegations against Andrew, further intensifying public scrutiny.

The decision also affects his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, who will no longer be referred to by any royal title associated with Andrew. However, Andrew will remain a prince by birth, a title he cannot renounce.

This marks a significant moment in the modern history of the British monarchy, as it seeks to distance itself from scandal and maintain public trust. King Charles is reportedly focused on streamlining the royal family’s public image and responsibilities.

Andrew’s departure from royal life is expected to be permanent, with no future plans for reinstatement or public engagement. The palace has not announced any replacement for his former roles or patronages.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions across the UK, with some praising the move as overdue and others questioning the royal family’s handling of the situation. The monarchy now faces the challenge of rebuilding its reputation amid ongoing public scrutiny.
