ABUJA, Nigeria (FN) — President Bola Tinubu on Friday dismissed Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa and other top military leaders in a sweeping overhaul of Nigeria’s security command.
The move, announced by presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare, is part of efforts to “strengthen the national security architecture.” General Olufemi Oluyede has been appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff. Other appointments include Major-General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
“The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expresses most profound appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the other Service Chiefs for their patriotic service and dedicated leadership,” the statement read.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio welcomed the appointments, describing them as “a bold step toward revitalizing Nigeria’s security apparatus.” He urged the new service chiefs to “act swiftly and decisively in addressing the nation’s pressing security challenges.”
Reactions from the public were mixed. Some citizens expressed hope that the new leadership would bring fresh energy to the fight against insecurity, while others voiced concern over the abrupt nature of the changes.
“We need results, not just reshuffling,” said Abuja resident Ibrahim Lawal. “I hope these new chiefs understand the urgency of our situation.”
“This is long overdue,” said Grace Nwankwo, a civil society advocate in Enugu. “The previous leadership had its strengths, but Nigeria needs a more proactive and responsive military.”
Tinubu charged the newly appointed service chiefs to justify the confidence reposed in them by enhancing professionalism, vigilance, and unity within the Armed Forces. All appointments take immediate effect.
