UYO, Nigeria (FN) — Former presidential candidate Asukwo Mendie Archibong, Esq., was involved in a road accident at about 7 p.m. Monday evening along Airport Road in Akwa Ibom State. The crash occurred after a cow belonging to herdsmen wandered onto the freeway, causing Archibong’s vehicle to collide with it, according to eyewitness reports.

Archibong, who contested in the 2019 presidential election under the platform of the Nigeria For Democracy, (NFD), sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. He is reported to be in stable condition and is expected to be discharged soon.

The impact caused significant damage to the vehicle and left the former presidential candidate visibly shaken. No lives were lost in the incident.

Nigerians joining voices have said the crash highlights the persistent dangers of cows roaming freely on major Nigerian highways.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the ownership of the cow and thus bring appropriate charges against them.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps also confirmed that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

“This incident adds to the growing list of road accidents and community clashes linked to the continuous movement of cattle on public roads and farmlands,” the spokesperson said.

It should be recalled that the administration of former Governor Udom Emmanuel signed into law a bill that stopped open grazing in Akwa Ibom State. However, enforcement of the law has remained inconsistent, drawing criticism from residents and civic groups who have called for stricter implementation to protect lives and property.

Archibong, a lawyer and civic advocate, expressed gratitude to those who reached out following the incident and reaffirmed his commitment to public service and good governance.
