OBANJANA, Nigeria (FN) — Dangote Cement Plant in Obajana has launched its 2025 Sustainability Week with a series of vibrant activities focused on sportsmanship, education, and community partnership. Themed “Sustainable Progress: Celebrating Growth and Partnerships,” the annual event began on October 24 and expanded its scope this year to promote holistic development across host communities.

According to a company statement, the initiative aims to strengthen ties between Dangote Cement’s workforce and surrounding communities through inclusive programming. Activities included cultural showcases, educational outreach, health awareness campaigns, and skill acquisition workshops.

Central to the week’s festivities was a football tournament that brought together teams from the Dangote Cement Obajana Plant, Dangote Cement Transport, and host communities. The multi-day event promoted physical wellness, recreation, and mutual respect among participants.

The final match, held on October 29 at the Obajana Academy Field, saw the Oyo Community Football Team clinch a 1–0 victory over Dangote Cement Transport. The game drew an enthusiastic crowd and marked the culmination of several days of spirited competition.

Senior management attended the finale, including Plant Director Azad Nawabuddin; CGM Maintenance Panjala Sreedar; CGM Production John Gwong; and GM Special Duties Ademola Adeyemi. Their presence underscored the company’s commitment to employee and community engagement.

“The energy and unity we witnessed throughout the tournament reflect our values of partnership and progress,” said Nawabuddin. “We’re proud to celebrate our communities and invest in their future.”

Local residents praised the initiative, describing the football event as a “rare opportunity” to connect with Dangote staff and showcase community talent. Members of the winning team expressed gratitude for the platform, calling it “a moment of pride and unity.”

The Kogi State Government, which has previously urged Dangote Cement to expand its CSR footprint, reiterated its call for deeper investment in youth development, education, and employment. Community leaders attending the event echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for sustained collaboration.

In addition to sports, the week featured scholarship announcements and infrastructure pledges aimed at empowering youth and improving quality of life in host communities. The initiative is part of Dangote Cement’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, which includes long-term investments in education, employment, and sustainable development across Nigeria.

Sustainability Week activities are expected to conclude with a community dialogue session and the unveiling of new CSR projects for the coming year.
